Received 2023.12.25 | Abstract. started working on their vision of a new, atheist society. They were dead set against the Church and started knocking heads with religious beliefs across the population. The government’s push for radical changes meant going head-to-head with the religious convictions and traditions of Russian folks. The state’s fight against religion was anything but straightforward – it was complex and touched on pretty much every aspect of life. This paper dives into the reasons behind the Soviet government’s anti-religious policies and how things unfolded in the 1920s and '30s within the Soviet Union. It also looks at the key legal moves aimed at clipping the Church’s wings, socially and politically, and effectively separating it from the state. The goal of this research is to pick apart the reasons that sparked the state’s anti-religious drive, as well as shedding light on the early laws that were aimed at combating religion. The study is built on a historical approach, blending chronological and historical-systematic research methods. Through careful scrutiny of historical records, legislative documents, and academic works on the subject, this work aims to unpack the motives behind the anti-religious campaign during that period in the USSR and clarify the actions taken by the government to carry out that campaign. |
